Artist Statement:
“Descending from a potato farming grandfather in Ireland and a dairy farming mother in Vermont, I appreciate soil and its possibilities. Rooted around an inquiry of foods that feed the world, I shaped this project with the three largest crops – rice,wheat,and corn(or maize). This body of work began as I looked at nourishment from different vantage points-farming, science, culture, history, politics, and of course, eating. Somewhere along the way, I was joined by an imaginary crow. She appears in most paintings hidden by layers of paint. Her activity adds details to my story. The soil holds nutrients as does the soul. In this time of questionable food security and accelerated climate change how will we provide nourishment?”
